Sinusitis means inflammation of a sinus. Most bouts of sinusitis are caused by an infection, but also can be caused by allergies and chemicals or particulate. The cheekbone (maxillary) sinuses are the most commonly affected.
Acute sinusitis (acute rhinosinusitis) causes the cavities around nasal passages (sinuses) to become inflamed and swollen. This interferes with drainage and causes mucus to build up. Sinusitis that lasts more than eight weeks or keeps coming back, despite treatment is called chronic sinusitis.

Sinusitis is said to be acute if it lasts from 4-30 days and subacute if it lasts 4-12 weeks. A mild bout of Acute Sinusitis is common and many people will have some degree of Sinusitis with a cold. However, severe Acute Sinusitis is uncommon. Most people only ever have one or two bouts of Acute Sinusitis in their lives. However, some people have repeated (recurring) bouts of Acute Sinusitis.
Sinusitis that lasts more than eight weeks or keeps coming back, despite treatment is called Chronic Sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis may be caused by an infection, but it can also be caused by growths in the sinuses (Nasal Polyps) or by a deviated nasal septum. Chronic Sinusitis most commonly affects young and middle-aged adults, but it also can affect children.
At least two of the following signs and symptoms must be present for a Diagnosis of Chronic Sinusitis
- Drainage of a thick, yellow or greenish discharge from the nose or down the back of the throat
- Nasal obstruction or congestion, causing difficulty breathing through nose
- Pain, tenderness and swelling around eyes, cheeks, nose or forehead
- Reduced sense of smell and taste
- Other signs and symptoms can include
- Ear pain
- Aching in upper jaw and teeth
- Cough, which may be worse at night
- Sore throat
- Bad breath (Halitosis)
- Fatigue or irritability
- Nausea

- Reduce stress and eat natural foods
- Steam inhalation can be of great help during an acute attack
- Drink plenty of fluids to thin the mucus.
For relieving symptoms of Sinusitis, Nasal sprays and Decongestants are medications generally taken for only a few days at the most. Otherwise they can cause the return of more severe congestion (Rebound Congestion). Besides prescription remedies including Pain relievers are resorted to depending upon requirement but they have their own ill effects and do not provide lasting relief. Side-effects can include Diarrhoea, a feeling of sickness (Nausea), being sick (vomiting), Skin rashes and fungal infection (Thrush).
